SMS PRO OUTFITS MOSCOW
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL WITH INTELIX
Moscow,
Russia—Russian-based SMS PRO, a division of Research Audio
Development Company, recently outfitted Moscow Airport's newly-constructed
International Terminal Vnukovo with a custom intelligent paging
system for controlling the terminal's eleven different priority
paging zones.
"The paging system is based on two main audio technologies—the
Crown IQ System and Intelix
MZP," elaborates Mr. Eremine, lead engineer on the
project. "These products allowed us to design the central
and local paging stations for providing custom paging control
specific to the international terminal, while ensuring convenient
and efficient user operation."
The Intelix MZP Series is unique in that it is designed
specifically for applications requiring multi-zone paging and program
distribution while still providing a platform flexible enough to allow
custom user setup and control. The MZP was a perfect fit for the Vnukovo
terminal installation, according to Mr. Eremine, because it offered
variable levels of priority paging, automatic audio ducking and ramping,
customizable end-user controls, custom zone grouping, and external logic
control for triggering pre-announce "gong" tones before each page, as
well as triggering the Flight Information Display System (F.I.D.S.) for
accurate audio/visual coordination.
The Intelix MZP also facilitated the creation of custom
paging stations, which were engineered by SMS PRO specifically for the
Vnukovo installation.
"Each
paging station consists of an Intelix Comet-4 programmable
remote, a Rolls CL151 compressor/limiter/gate, AKG D542 dynamic
microphone, and the Crown IQ System for logical control,"
explains Mr. Eremine. "These components allowed us to
build controls which would be convenient for the airport's
employees even in remote locations. In total, there are 11
unique paging zones, so the system required two central paging
stations and nine local paging stations."
Because the local paging stations are used by employees
on the floor and located throughout the terminal's main area
of traffic, SMS PRO required a design which could be quickly
and efficiently operated, thereby assuring maximum passenger
safety and flow. For example, color buttons provide quick
orientation for the operator, while LED indicators visually
reaffirm which selections are in use. SMS PRO also
included an input level meter, gating LED, and microphone
on/off button, all of which are orientated for quick operation.
These controls allow employees to both select specific zones
in which to page, as well as logically group zones so that
multiple areas within the terminal would receive the announcement
quickly and effectively.
The two central paging stations marry the simple control
demonstrated by the local paging stations with a robust LCD display,
thereby allowing more complex operations such as fault, high
temperature, and load status.
SMS PRO's unique paging system and custom-built paging
stations are now fully operational, providing high-quality zoned paging
for the International Terminal Vnukovo in Moscow. Major of Moscow U.M.
Luzhkov proclaimed the official opening of the terminal with a formal
ceremony marking the occasion.
And
though SMS PRO's design incorporates specific elements from
several different manufacturers, the system as a whole remains
flexible for future reprogramming and expansion thanks to
the multi-zone matrix mixer at the heart of the system: "the
Intelix MZP provided the flexibility in programming the paging
stations which made our custom design possible."
