A balun is a small transformer which converts an
audio or video signal from unbalanced to balanced and vice-versa.
By doing so, baluns make the necessary impedance adjustment for
A/V signal transmission between different wiring systems.
This is not to say all Cat 5 audio and video extenders are true
"baluns;" many current products actually convert analog
signals to digital formats for transmission. In other words, the
video signal is turned into 1s and 0s and broadcast over the Cat
5 in much the same way an internet signal is.
All of the high-end active Intelix products use this digital
technology. Why then does Intelix call them baluns? Why is Tang
called juice? The word "balun" has become synonymous
with products used to send signals over structured cabling, such
as Cat 5.
